About Tonkinese

A Tonkinese cat is commonly described as elegant, communicative, active and intelligent, with a lithe firm muscular body, with short fine and silky hair, and being of moderate foreign type. Its beautiful head is a medium wedge with large shapely ears, and almost almond shaped eyes. This is a cat with real style and presence. The Tonkinese appear in a range of colours and patterns; brown, blue, chocolate, lilac (these equate with the USA?s natural, blue, champagne and platinum) also available are caramel, red, cream and apricot. In addition there are tabbies and tortoiseshells in all of these possible colour variations. Its average life span is approximately 15 years, but longer in some exceptional cases. The coat pattern of a Tonkinese should flow gently from the darker points, to the body base coat colour, without any sharp lines or contrasts. The feet are small and oval, and the legs are slim but muscular. The Tonkinese always feels much heavier than it looks because it has a strong muscled body. The tail is carried erect when the cat is happy and playing. There are three coat patterns in the breed. The Mink Tonkinese coat pattern as just described, the solid coat pattern, and the pointed coat pattern with its distinct coloured points. The solids and the pointed are not eligible for exhibition at this time, but representation from the Tonkinese Breed Club and The Tonkinese Cat Club hope to amend this in the coming years so all Tonkinese can appear and compete on the Show bench.Tonkinese are affectionate, intelligent, gregarious cats, with lively personalities which make them ideal companions. Each individual Tonkinese will display unique qualities of inquisitiveness, inventiveness and playfulness, and these are such endearing characteristics that ensure every Tonkinese has a place as a true family member. Besides relating to humans very well, they develop strong bonds with their own kind, with children and other household pets.A single cat household is a very lonely place for any cat, especially so for a Tonkinese. Therefore, it is advisable for owners to provide other feline or canine company. Tonkinese are very happy to remain indoors as "indoor cats", but also enjoy the facility of a secure garden or a secure outside run. As Tonkinese are so friendly to humans, if left to roam they could easily be spirited away, or even killed by traffic. These delightful cats are intelligent enough to fit in to whatever life style their humans choose to live, when it?s time to rest or sleep, so will they, when their humans decide it?s time to play, then they will be ready and able. The Tonkinese is a complete cat.
