Devon Rex
The Devon Rex is one of Britain's native breeds of cat. The breed is popular and well established in the UK and around the world, although it is not as commonly seen as some of the more numerous breeds. It is popular with those who are attracted to something a bit unusual as they have a truly unique look with their soft curly coats and pixie-like faces.

They are also very playful cats who never fully leave their kittenhoods behind. The Devon Rex breed began in 1960 when Beryl Cox from Buckfastleigh in Devon befriended a feral cat who gave birth to a litter of kittens in her garden. She named one of these kittens Kirlee because unlike his littermates he had beautiful curly fur. He was almost certainly fathered by an unapproachable feral tom cat who lived in a nearby tin mine and sported the same curls.Much to everyone's surprise, it was established that Kirlee's genetics were not compatible with the Cornish Rex breed which had been discovered ten years earlier and was in its early development. It was then decided that Kirlee would be the founding father of the new Devon Rex breed and a careful outcrossing programme was implemented to form the breed's foundations.Outcrossing continues to be an important breeding strategy today as it is a valuable way of increasing and strengthening the breed's genepool. Experienced breeders will cross cats with breeds from an approved list and mate the offspring back to Devon Rex.All coat colours and patterns are accepted for Devon Rexes. The breed comes in a beautiful spectrum. This adds excitement to the arrival of a new litter of kittens as some amazing combinations are possible.
