EXCAVATIONS AND INVESTIGATIONSFrom our start about 30 years ago, we have tried to be a society actively involved in surveys, fieldwork and excavations. As well as our members giving assistance to other archaeologists in Lichfield, Coleshill, Mancetter, Solihull and other places we have done work of our own at e.g.: Sydenhams Moated Site, Tanworth in Arden. This dig was run from about 1975 to 1985. A major moated site excavation, on the site of the manor house of Simon de Mancetter established c.1240 and occupied until its abandonment c.1400. This remarkable site was unaffected by later disturbance and produced good evidence for the layout of timber framed buildings. Results published in the Transactions of the Birmingham and Warwickshire Archaeolgical Society vol. 96 for 1989/90. Chester House, Knowle. Excavations in the course of conservation work. Results displayed on site. Monkspath Hill Farmhouse. Study of a 16th century farmhouse before it was demolished for motorway roundabout. Results in society?s newsletter and offprint. Nuthurst (Tanworth in Arden) house platforms. Plans and excavated section in society?s newsletter. Knowle Hall This dig is linked to research by Mrs Jean Powrie on the history of the manor of Knowle. The site has been investigated geophysically as well as excavated. The original Knowle Hall was a moated site of the 14th Century or earlier; transformed into the site of a mansion of the Cope family in the 16th Century; enlarged and probably rebuilt as mansion of the Greville family (of Warwick Castle) from the 17th Century; then followed decay and eventual demolition under the ownership of the Wilson family in the early 19th Century - SAG has just been 'Highly Commended' in a National Competition for Community Archaeology for this dig During 2005/06 we have been excavating Castle Hills Farm at Bickenhill by kind permission of Birmingham International AirportIn 2008 we located the site of the demolished Elmdon Hall in partnership with Solihull Parks service
